Is it ballad? Is it a play? No, it's a super idea! But now what?
When a writing idea arrives, how do you know what form it should take?
As I said in a comment on this note, authors who write in several forms often get asked, ‘How do you know if it’s a short story, or a poem, or what?’ And the answer most of them give seems to be a variation on ‘I do just know, at some point.’ Which may be true, but it’s not terribly helpful to the writer who’s just had a terrific (or deliciously potent, or powerfully spooky, or quakingly hilarious) idea - and doesn’t know what to do next.
To be honest, I do just know is probably my short answer too, but that’s not good enough for an Itch post, so I’m going to dig in. You might want to have a nice-but-not-too-demandingly-smart notebook to your physical or digital hand.
